1. There is actual science behind why being positive/optimistic is beneficial

2. By changing the way you perceive an event or situation, you can change both your reaction and action to it.

3. Your can literally change your life by changing both what your perceive and how you perceive it. If you don’t like your reality, start by changing your perception.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:58 pm

Trace the face of a clock on a ceiling. Now look down, your finger is going counterclockwise. What changed? Nothing! Your perspective! SO IF YOU DON’T LIKE YOUR REALITY, CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:57 pm

Tell your brain what to see.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:56 pm

optimism influences your outcome. Tell uras what to focus on!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:55 pm

99% of information is unimportant. The brain detects, deletes and distorts.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:55 pm

Optimists realize sh*t happens to everyone. Pessimists see sh*t as the end.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:54 pm

Optimism and pessimism determines your outcome.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:53 pm

The way that you perceive an event determines your reaction. Your reaction determines your reality. Your perspective is your reality.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:53 pm

Haley is a POSITIVE person. She’s here to start a REVOLUTION.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:52 pm

THIS IS IT!
Are you ready?! Get on your feet. Put your hands together for HALEY B. GOUGE!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:52 pm

Let’s treat this holistically!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:51 pm

1. The way our society is approaching and representing obesity in both adults and children has not been effective and may have exacerbated the issue.
2. Children have become increasingly fearful of becoming overweight (one study demonstrated that children feared becoming fat more than they fear a parent dying) and this impacts them not only medically but psychologically.
3. There are simple and effective steps parents and adults can do to promote a healthy lifestyle for themselves and their children.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:51 pm

We don’t know the mortality weight with BMI, but we do know the mortality rate of people who have eating disorders.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:51 pm

As a nation, we spend 60.9 BILLION dollars on dieting, but diets don’t work. 95% of people who lose weight with diets, actually gain that weight back.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:49 pm

Consider all facts. Not just a number!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:49 pm

Can you if we looked solely at BMI, Will Smith and George Clooney would be considered obese!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:48 pm

Obesity may actually not be an epidemic. And the things we are doing are actually making the situation worse!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:47 pm

Now Heidi Limbrunner! Find Heidi at http://www.southeastpsych.com. Her talk: “Fat Or Fiction? The Truth About The Obesity Epidemic”

I <3 BEER!!! I hope you do too!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:45 pm

REDUCE. REUSE.
If you’re not going to brew your own beer, drink local beer.
Reduce greenhouse gases.
Reuse, brew your own beer!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:45 pm

The process: boiling wort and hops (this sanitizes the liquid and provides the hop aroma and the bitterness); then the fermentation; then it’s the waiting….

IT’S THE HARDEST PART!!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:43 pm

DYK – Many breweries have proprietary yeast, because it’s that important to the formula of beer!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:42 pm

Yeast is a vital ingredient because it makes BEER!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:42 pm

Grains are the sugary liquid for wort.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:42 pm

3 basic ingredients: grains, hops, water.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:41 pm

What if you could brew your own beer?!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:41 pm

34 different styles of beer

The potty jokes are happening…it must be getting late.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:40 pm

Reminder: if it’s not bio=digradable, don’t put it in your drain; this includes grease!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:39 pm

Sand. Water. Filter. Disinfection –> UV disinfection! Oxygenation.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:38 pm

Filter out the stuff you can see. Biology handles the things you can’t see.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:37 pm

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:27 pm

Where are our STEM rock stars?!
Let’s focus on those things!
Science
Technology
Math

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:26 pm

Building a community, accessing the online community. We don’t need new or powerful computers to teach programming language. We can use what we have.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:25 pm

How do we teach computer languages when teachers are already stretched to the max. It’s hard to get principals, politicians, and people on board with the idea of software development.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:24 pm

Every passing year technology becomes more ubiquitous. It will become more crucial for all fields to embrace some level of development skills and we need to start preparing our students at an early age to ensure they will be successful. In that same way that students learn reading, writing, math, and foreign languages at a young age, too they should be learning how computers work and how to engage with them.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:24 pm

Darn those kittens are cute!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:23 pm

Software languages can’t solve hunger or cure cancer, but it can certainly supplement devices that solve these problems.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:22 pm

Please welcome to the stage:

John wants us to know:
*That Jazz is fun and approachable

*That anyone can be an improviser

*what the bass’ role is in jazz

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:21 pm

Hopefully, you’ll be able to enjoy what you’re hearing next time you’re at a club; and you’ll know the difference between a bass and a cello.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:20 pm

He improvises his bass walk based on what he hears.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:19 pm

Scales are notes ordered in an octave.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:18 pm

If you go up, you also want to come down.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20138:18 pm

Walking bass is like a game of connect-the-dots. You have a root, a place you want to be and a path to get to where you want to be.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:48 pm

No matter how bad life is, it’s not as bad as a zombie apocalypse. We can focus on the positive and spot the Cherokee rose of resiliency!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:47 pm

Action
Assistance
Attention

The AAA battery to resiliency

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:47 pm

Positivity, leads to pro-social behavior

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:46 pm

1) There are things we CAN control and things we can’t
2) We benefit from a group, our friends our family, and even our dogs
3) Be attention to the present moment; be mindful when you’re going through something stressful.

*Think about 3 positives things anytime you’re faced with stress.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:45 pm

Resilience is in our genes. But since we all can’t choose our genes, so thank goodness for the other part, our environment. We can learn new ways to adapt and bounce back!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:44 pm

Resilience comes from the Latin word resilio, which means to bounce back.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:43 pm

Walking Dead fans should immediately recognize the symbolism of hope and resiliency behind the Cherokee Rose reference, which I would explain in my talk. I began watching The Walking Dead after being forced to for making a hyper-masculine guy watch 27 Dresses. It turned out I loved it and find it a great example of characters with a remarkable amount of resiliency. My research area currently is in resiliency and post-traumatic growth (as opposed to post-traumatic stress) and also integrate it into my classes and clinical work. Our society seems to have a resiliency deficit at times, and most people don’t realize that resiliency is a skill that can be learned. Therefore, my talk would be practically-minded in teaching some resiliency skills to use when you are chased by zombies (metaphorical or otherwise).

As you leave today, be inspired and leave your snakes alone. And if a friend asks if a snake is poisonous…go ahead and correct them! No, No, they’re venomous!!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:29 pm

50% of all people bit by venomous snakes are picking up the snakes in the wild…and of those folks, 50% have a high Blood Alcohol Content. So stay sober and you won’t get bit!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:27 pm

Furthermore, most snakes are non-venomous.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:26 pm

You can touch a snake, you can eat a snake. Remember: they are venomous not poisonous!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:25 pm

UP NEXT: Nicki Dardinger. Officially, Director of Grants, and informally, Nature Ambassador Extraordinaire

Let’s raise the bar. Encourage yoga instructors to learn sandskrit and then we will all be shinier happier people.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:17 pm

Better yet, learn how to read everyone’s bad tattoos!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:17 pm

Learning a dead language is fascinating and fun!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:16 pm

OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHMMMMMMMMMMM………………

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:16 pm

Chanting is like riding a transcendental train of the universe….

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:15 pm

The sandskrit sound is designed to harness the power of the universe.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:15 pm

Sounds affect us! The quality, not the quantity!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:15 pm

The YOGA ALLIANCE is bringing a standard to yoga. Bringing in sandskrit to the professionalism of the industry.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:14 pm

How you ask? Through YOGA!!!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:14 pm

It’s hard to believe sandskrit, a dead language, is still ALIVE and well!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:13 pm

Please welcome Dr. Marcy Braverman Goldstein – visiting professor http://www.sanskritrevolution.com for her talk: “Better Living Through A Dead Language”

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:12 pm

The three things the doctor wants the audience to learn and take away from my talk are: (1) though still important for school, the role of human memory is changing in the world, (2) memory is not a single thing- it is multiple components and can work differently depending on the type of information, and (3) memory can be improved with strategies and study tactics and technology can help as well.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:11 pm

Teachers need to know what is important to memorize and when it is important to teach learning.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:11 pm

Break words apart. Research word origins. Learn a word’s story.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:10 pm

PROMOTE UNDERSTANDING

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:10 pm

The good doctor says, YES! It helps us to learn how to put information into other formats. Shifting the format makes you think about the info and understand it, and then file it away in LONG TERM MEMORY!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:09 pm

Should we even bother to ask kids to memorize things anymore when kids have google, siri, wiki?

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:08 pm

We rely on our phones for everything!

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:08 pm

Long term memory is getting less important than ever before.

Ignite Charlotte September 17, 20137:07 pm

Quick poll: How many of you memorized state facts, math tables?
